Fall into Autumn with Made in the U.S.A. Style

We are waking up to crisp mornings, leaves are beginning to change, squirrels are scurrying to store acorns and the smells of apples and pumpkins waft at local orchards and cafes. Fall is here! Labor Day Brought More Attention to the Return of Made in America

Labor Day is a day set aside to commemorate the hard work and achievements of American workers. This Labor Day Weekend, we celebrated with new attention to the made in U.S.A. movement. As we learn more about the conditions under which some foreign products are made, develop concerns about the materials used to make these products and realize what an impact buying locally produced products can have, we are learning the importance of purchasing American-made and are having an impact.

This past weekend, there were a number of articles about made in the U.S.A. that are worth the read. What a perfect weekend for these articles to be published! Parade Magazine had a wonderful multimedia feature titled "The Return of Made in the U.S.A." You will find a nice gallery showing images of manufacturing in the U.S. today. Several workers are profiled in different sections of the feature. Often, you hear about the companies behind the products but you do not see the people making those products. You can even take a peek into the Workman Cycles and General Pencil factories. Really a nice feature!

Last week, PlasticsNews published an article about Little Tikes returning some of their manufacturing back to a factory in Hudson, Ohio. The company has seen economic growth in the last several years and credits that to moving some of its manufacturing back to Ohio. With a rise in energy costs, logistical hurdles with transporting items and growing concern about toys made overseas, moving some of the manufacturing back to the U.S. made sense.

In "'Made in USA' on the rise as manufacturing costs drops", CNBC discusses how rising transportation costs and lower electricity and natural gas costs make the U.S.A. an attractive option for manufacturing. An interesting read!

Summer's end is quickly approaching with the Labor Day holiday this weekend. Be part of a revolution by buying American

Have you ever heard about NorthernGRADE or American Field? If you have, I am sure that you are inspired. If you haven't, you will be inspired. NorthernGRADE and American Field are both pop up markets selling only American-made apparel. The markets only "pop up" a few times of the year in a few cities across the country. They provide a way for shoppers to see American craftmanship, meet craftsmen and ask vendors specific questions about manufacturing, sourcing, etc.

CNN published an article by Emanuella Grinberg this past November about these vibrant pop up markets titled Made in America markets create communities of like-minded consumers. Some attendees drove a considerable distance to the market in Chicago. It is quite inspirational to see that buying quality, made in USA clothes means that much. Additionally, the author of the article noted that the younger demographic was very much represented during the market, even teenagers! How wonderful to see so many dedicated to these Made in America brands.

When assessing market visitor's motivation, Grinberg noted: "One thing they all seemed to share was nostalgia for an era when clothing and accessories were made to last, regardless of whether they were actually alive during that time."

Consumers were coming to find something unique and something that would last. Plus, they had the remarkable chance to actually meet the people that designed and crafted the clothing. These markets do seem a bit like a revolution in thinking and consuming. How great to see more people understanding the quality and unique design of American-made products.  Definitely, check out the article!

Keep Asking for American Made!

We are making a difference! After reading this article, "Forget ‘Buy American’? U.S. Retailers Push an ‘Imports Work’ Campaign." I knew that the Buy American movement was really getting the message out and times are a changing. More and more of us are asking for Made in U.S.A. products and that scares many retailers who only sell imports. Change can only happen when the people demand it and we are demanding it! 

I encourage you to read the article and read between the lines. Here is one quote, "What’s more, as for those socks imported from China, Baughman says that such products help—rather than hinder—U.S. employment: “It’s Americans that unload the socks at the port. It’s Americans that are involved in the marketing and selling of those socks.” There will always be imports and retailers, so there will always be dock workers and sales associates, but just think how many more people are employed in America when we grow the cotton, make the yarn, knit the sock, package the sock, sell the sock, buy the sock, export the sock and how good we feel when we wear the sock that is completely made in the U.S.A.. By the way, we do make tons of socks completely in America so there is absolutely no reason to buy socks made anywhere else!

I have always believed that all countries should have a strong manufacturing base. What we need now in America is more competition within the industries to help bring prices down. We need a rebirth of our textile industry so we can have more towels, sheets and clothing made here. We need to bring the production of kitchen appliances back to America along with scientific glass, heating elements and power cords suitable to be used in these products. Americans are tired of cheap products that break or don't work after one use. We don't want to be a "throw away society", we want products that last.
