When the air turns crisp and the leaves present striking hues, our minds quickly turn to enjoying some of our fall favorites! Around this time of year, one particularly vibrant childhood fall treat starts hitting the shelves--candy corn! Candy corn has been wrapped up in fall celebration for quite some time and while it stands on its own as a treat, it also appears as part of other fall delights and décor. Candy corn may be a ubiquitous part of fall, but how much do you know about the sweet white, yellow and orange kernels? Here are a few facts:
- The candy corn was originally invented in the 1880's by George Renninger of the Wunderlee Candy Company.
- Around 1898, the Goelitz Candy Company (now Jelly Belly) began producing candy corn. The Goelitz Company brought the striped goodie to the masses.
- The tri-color design of the candy was pretty novel at the time, so consumers fell in love!
- In the 1920's, candy corn was nicknamed "chicken feed" and was sold in boxes with a rooster on front.
- Candy corn began to achieve its esteemed status as a Halloween candy in the 1950's when people began to hand out packaged candy to trick-or-treaters.
- For such a pervasive treat, we need a holiday right? October 30 just happens to be National Candy Corn Day! So, you can celebrate the treat the day before Halloween!
